For Calum Whyte from Lanark, studying HND Computing: Software Development at West Lothian College has led directly to a full-time job with media giants, Sky UK.
Calum completed his HNC at another college before taking a year out to decide if a career in software development was for him. He then decided to do his HND at West Lothian College and describes his experience here:
“West Lothian College was easy for me to get to, and the course was really enjoyable. I really got on with my classmates, and I especially liked the systems design part of the course.”
The opportunity to work at Sky UK came about as a result of a guest speaker talking to the class:
“The main point of the talk was the work placements available at Sky. I thought a placement was a great way to gain industry experience so that, when I applied for jobs, my CV showed relevant work experience. I successfully applied and have spent a week in each department learning how everything works. As my placement drew to an end, my mentor told me about a full-time job which was being advertised. I applied never thinking I would get the job. But I did!”
Calum has hit the ground running at Sky, and is already an integral part of the team:
“Even though I am working, I am still learning so much every day. At the moment, I am focusing on reference data which entails updating records and putting new offers into the system which get put through to the call centre.”
As for his next move, Calum has a bit of thinking to do:
“My initial plan was to go to university and get a degree, but Sky has already offered me the chance to progress within the company, so I am very excited about what the future holds.”
