West Lothian College Art students celebrate 100% success

HNC Art students at West Lothian College are celebrating as they secure multiple degree offers to move on to university.

All 13 students on the course have secured degree offers on courses ranging from graphic design to fashion communication. With less than a 5% chance of obtaining a place at a specialist art institution the students have beaten the odds to secure their place.

On top of that, eight of the students have the option of going directly into year 2 of their studies at university. This is excellent news for the class in what has been a challenging end to the academic year because of the Covid19 crisis.

Sarah Smillie, who has the choice of all four Scottish Art Schools including two second year options, said: “This course is something that I have really enjoyed. After leaving school and not quite wanting to go to university straight away, I took the steps to attend college first and I am very glad I did. I gained so much more knowledge along with creating friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

“I have loved working beside and collaborating with the other students to create ideas that I would never have thought of and together develop projects and have fun along the way.”

Art Lecturer Alex Harvey said: “We aim to equip students with a broad ranging and in-depth understanding of the most current art practices. Each person works extremely hard to meet the standard and diversity of skills required to be made offers like these, across so many different departments. We are immensely proud of each student’s achievements and wish everyone continued success.”

Jackie Galbraith, Principal of West Lothian College said: “Another excellent year for our HNC Art students! I would like to congratulate our talented students and the outstanding lecturers who have taught, inspired and supported them.”

Hazel Brady heads up the Business, Creative and Enterprise faculty. She added: “Our HNC Art course offers students an opportunity to develop a bespoke portfolio. In recent years we have seen students go into an impressive range of disciplines: animation, concept development for games design, footwear design, jewellery, graphics, illustration and so much more. Congratulations to the art team and to each and every one of our art students.”
