A West Lothian College student has secured a place in the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Mechanical Engineering Computed-Aided Design (CAD).

The competition is aimed a promoting excellence across more than 40 skill areas, helping students and apprentices develop advanced technical abilities that empower them to succeed in their careers and support business growth.

And after showcasing exceptional skill during the qualifiers, engineering student Slawomir Keller will compete against other students from across the UK at the end of November.

Slawomir, who is in his final year of the HNC Engineering Systems and works for Mitsubishi Electric, has demonstrated “exceptional potential” since joining the evening course in his upskilling journey.

His lecturer, Tomasz Sliwinski, recognised Slawomir’s talent early on and nominated him for the competition after observing his outstanding progress. He said: “From the outset, Slawomir has demonstrated exceptional potential, with his knowledge and skills developing rapidly across all subject areas, particularly in CAD, where he continues to excel.

“He completed all the tutorials and assessments halfway through the module. That’s when I decided to nominate him for the competition. He quickly began working on tutorials supplied by WorldSkills, and at that point, I realised there was nothing more I could teach him. There were moments I couldn’t solve some of them myself- that’s how advanced these tasks are. Slawomir worked hard every week and completed all the tutorials given to him. He breezed through the online qualifier stage, and just before the summer holidays, he completed another online stage to secure his place in the final.”

Slawomir added: “The competition is hard, but I am looking forward to the competition- it is on a national stage so, no pressure. I’m looking forward to it- it should be good fun.”

Rodney Ayre, Senior Department Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, added: "Mitsubishi Electric is deeply committed to developing talent within the company and the West Lothian Community, working closely will schools and colleges to ensure future generation have access to the workplace as they decide on their careers.

“Slawomir’s achievement in securing a space at the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Mechanical Engineering Computed-Aided Design (CAD), is a result of his hard work and commitment recognising what can be achieve when business and education work together.”
