This is an exciting one-year course for anyone wanting to begin a career in barbering.

This course is suitable for beginners, looking to build and develop skills within the barbering industry working in our new modern realistic salon environment- The Rookie Barber.

You'll gain the skills and knowledge to progress on to VQ3 Barbering or into employment in the barbering trade.

    What the course includes

    Ready to kickstart your career in barbering? Our Barbering course offers a hands-on, industry-focused learning experience that will equip you with the essential skills to create stylish, on-trend looks for your clients. You’ll master key techniques such as basic cutting, outlining, and detailing hair, as well as shaping facial hair using professional techniques. You’ll also learn how to shampoo and finish gents’ hair to perfection, ensuring every client leaves looking sharp. 

    Working as part of a team, you’ll have the opportunity to create industry-standard looks while staying up to date with the latest trends. The course features practical assessments, giving you the chance to demonstrate your growing expertise, alongside portfolio development and online VTCT assessments to track your progress. 

    By the end of the course, you'll have the skills, confidence, and experience to thrive in a fast-paced barbering environment, ready to take on clients and create standout styles. Whether you're aiming for a salon role or planning to work independently, this course will set you up for success in the exciting world of barbering.

You will learn and create current and emerging cuts in a realistic salon environment, preparing you for employment. Guest speakers will tell you about career options, carry out live demos; and additional courses will keep you up to date with trends. There will be opportunities to develop and showcase your skills by entering industry competitions supported by your lecturers 

Students who have successfully completed NVQ2 or SVQ2 Barbering have progressed to employment in barber shops and freelance barbers  

You will be taught by industry-experienced staff, and train in a commercial Barbers within the college. 

Entry Requirements

  • You must be 16 years or over before the start of the course 
  • Have an interest in the barbering is essential 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with the general public 
  • Highly motivated 

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved ESOL National 5 (or equivalent)

    Education: VQ Level 3 Barbering 

    Employment: As a Barber within a barber’s salon or self-employed. 

Interview arrangements

If selected for interview, you will be required to complete the follow:  

  • Welcome and course information  
  • Individual interview  
  • Written task  

You must pass both the interview and the practical/written tasks.
