Kate Stewart HNC Art (Portfolio Production)
Kate Stewart's experience is a fantastic example of how college can bridge the gap between school and university, and illustrates how you can achieve amazing things if you are passionate about something.
Kate first came to West Lothian College for an evening class to build her art skills alongside her school work. After achieving her Highers, she studied NC Art & Design, after which she progressed to HNC Art (Portfolio Production) where she excelled.
“Art is my passion, I love it and I have really enjoyed my time at West Lothian College. I knew I wanted to achieve a degree but I didn’t feel ready for university straight from school so I definitely feel I made the right choice by attending West Lothian College, where the standard of work is consistently high.”
Kate was offered places at Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, and an offer of direct entry to second year at Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University where she is currently studying.
“I am so glad that I chose the path I did. Schools push you to try and go to university but that’s not for everyone and that is totally fine. I personally gained more from college than I would have by going to university straight from school."
There is fierce competition for places at these universities. For example, on average, 5,500 people apply to Edinburgh College of Art each year for just 250 places. Being offered 4 places at degree level speaks volumes about the level of academic excellence Kate has achieved. So much so that Kate was awarded The SQA Student of the Year at our recent graduation ceremony.
This honour is awarded to a student who has exhibited outstanding academic achievement and this is something Kate has most definitely shown during her time at West Lothian College.
