Chitambo Ramsay NC Hairdressing Level 5

Before coming to West Lothian College, Chitambo Ramsay was working for a large banking group and staying on the Isle of Man.

When she and her family moved to Scotland, a transfer to another branch wasn’t an option so Chitambo decided to fulfil a long term ambition and applied to study hairdressing at the college. However learning a new skill wasn’t the only reason for her application.

“When we moved to Livingston I saw being unemployed as an opportunity to pursue something I have always been interested in but had kept putting off. The other main reason was the social aspect. I had just moved to a new place and I thought I could combine both by applying to study hairdressing. I would meet people while learning something I have always wanted to.

I already do hair extensions and I thought it would be great to get a formal qualification as well so I applied and I am now studying NC Hairdressing Level 5 at the college.”

Chitambo is enjoying studying at the college and is surprised at how much information she has taken in already:

“It’s really good. They pack so much into the course and I really feel I am learning a lot. I am already planning to be here next year for Level 6. The help is there if you need it but you are also given a lot of creative freedom which is a nice balance.”

Looking to the future, Chitambo hopes to eventually become self-employed after gaining some work experience.
