Step into Sport & Leisure - In partnership with Xcite at West Lothian Leisure

This short full-time course will give students the opportunity to gain the necessary skills to progress into employment with Xcite in roles such as a Pool Lifeguard or a sessional Coach across key sports such as football, gymnastics and badminton, whilst also enhancing their academic qualifications to allow progression to higher levels of study. Xcite is the brand name for West Lothian Leisure sports and fitness venues.   We provide fitness, sport, leisure, culture, outdoor learning and wellbeing across West Lothian.  We are so much more than just a gym.  We are here to improve the lives of our local communities and provide a place for people to come together to get fit, feel great or be entertained.  Whether you come in for a workout in our gyms, a dip in the pool, to take a class with friends or see a show at Howden Park Centre, we welcome everyone and we are here for you.

Start Date: Monday 23rd January

  • What the course includes

The course includes industry recognised qualifications such as the NPLQ and introductory coaching qualifications. 89% of Duty Managers & above at Xcite have the NPLQ which means even if being a Pool Lifeguard isn’t your first job choice it still gives you entry into the leisure industry and a possible pathway to Management if you wish to progress your career in that way. Students will plan coaching sessions, devise fitness programmes, understand the equipment used in the Leisure industry whilst also taking time to plan their next step.

Why choose this course

This course provides the real opportunity to seek employment within the leisure industry with the Partner organisation Xcite. Every student that successfully completes the course will get an interview for a position in roles such as a Pool Life Guard or a sessional Coach. Every student that successfully completes the NPLQ course are guaranteed an interview with Xcite for a position as a Pool Lifeguard. You will receive training around rescue and first aid as part of the programme as well as the chance to develop your ability as a swimmer.

A key part of the ‘Step into Leisure’ course has the NPLQ as an optional extra, so if you wanted the option of employment with Xcite as a Lifeguard then this is the option for you.

The NPLQ programme will be towards the end of your course, giving plenty of time to develop your swimming proficiency. Regulations state that every candidate attending a NPLQ course must be 16-years-old at the time of taking the NPLQ final assessment and be able to:

  • Jump/dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits

You don’t need to be able to do these at the start of the ‘Step into Sport & Leisure’ course but develop yourself to be able to do them ready for the commencement of your NPLQ.
