This course is for S4 students looking for a basic introduction to engineering.

Days: Tuesday and Thursday, and occasional Friday afternoon
Times: 1:30pm – 4:30pm
Duration: 1 year

This course prepares you for the Foundation Apprenticeship in engineering which you can do in S5 and S6.

Whatever your interest in the engineering sector- you’ll close the gap between the classroom and the workplace, and find out more about the world of work.

  • What the course includes

    The course covers basic skills in mechanical engineering, mainly workshop-based, as well as mathematics, engineering measurement, and health and safety. Subjects include:

    • Engineering workshop skills
    • Engineering materials
    • Turning (using lathes)
    • Health and safety

Entry requirements

  • An interest in mathematics and science
  • Completing minimum of National 4 maths at school

Interview arrangements

We will invite you for an interview. This usually lasts for around one and a half hours and consists of:

  • Presentation by a tutor about the course
  • Tour of engineering
  • Short test (mainly mathematical skills)
  • Individual interview
