    What the course includes

    The course includes: 

    • Child development to support knowledge and understanding of all aspects of development for children and young people, pre-birth to 18. 
    • Children and young people with additional support needs, investigating different needs and appropriate resources to support children’s development 
    • Developing knowledge and understanding of how to support behaviour in children and young people
    • Rights and entitlements, which includes safeguarding of children and young people and the policies that need to be followed 
    • Practical units including play, placement and outdoor learning

Why choose this course

You will have the chance to gain work experience through a placement in an educational setting working as a pupil support worker; to work in our purpose-built playroom and outdoor classroom; and to attend our children and young people’s services conference.

This will help you learn about the initiatives and services that support children and young people.

Entry requirements

  • Formal qualifications are not a requirement as we welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience. Entry to the course will be dependent on successfully passing a written and numeracy test. 

An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required. This will be carried out with the college if a place is offered.  

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.  

  • Where it leads

    Education: HNC childhood practice, or other HNC level courses at West Lothian College.

    Employment: Registration at support worker level in the childhood practice sector.

Interview arrangements

If we invite you for an interview, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview consists of:

  • Short written and numeracy task
