NQ Sustainable Construction & Architecture

This course is for those wanting to develop practical skills and technical knowledge, for work in the construction industry, in areas such as project management, quantity surveying or architecture.  

You will learn architectural skills in Computer Aided Design (CAD), construction technical and management procedures, that will enable you to work cooperatively in a construction environment, such as surveying, groundworks and house construction. Sustainability and low carbon technologies are becoming increasingly important to the sector. You will be able to experience these in-situ, in the College’s own Ecohouse. 

  • What the course includes

    The aim of this course is to provide a fundamental appreciation of key technical aspects of the construction process, architecture and project management. It is designed to enable complete beginners to gain the essential knowledge required for further study, at HNC level, then university. 

    The course is mostly theory and includes site visits to local construction suppliers and contractors, such as, Morrison Construction, Breedon and Bellway Homes 

    The course is classroom-based with practical experience in workshops and though field trips and site visits. It includes:

    • Construction Technology: Groundworks and Substructure 
    • Construction Technology: Superstructure and Finishes  
    • Computer Aided Drafting: An Introduction  
    • Construction Calculations  
    • Construction Materials: An Introduction  
    • Construction Site Surveying: An Introduction  
    • Health and Safety in the Construction Industry  
    • Built Environment Project  
    • Drawing for Construction  
    • Mathematics: Craft 1 
    • Construction Project Management: An Introduction

NQ Sustainable Construction & Architecture is the ideal introduction to a wide range of construction disciplines. It is aimed at prospective students who are interested in a dynamic, varied and financially rewarding construction-related career, but did not gain the necessary qualifications at school, or have no relevant experience. 

The course assumes no prior knowledge of construction and equips learners with knowledge, skills and the confidence to progress to further study at HNC level, or apply for trainee employment, in a construction technician role. 

Entry requirements

  • Minimum of two National 5s, ideally  in English, Science, Mathematics or appropriate subjects or; 
  • National Certificates in related discipline or; 
  • Construction craft qualification combined with further study before/along with NC programme or; 
  • SCQF level 5 in construction/engineering or; 
  • Relevant industrial experience/similar qualifications 
  • Those without the above qualifications but with relevant life or work experience are encouraged to apply 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Education: successful completion of this course provides access to study at HNC level, available courses including; 

     
    HNC Construction Management 
    HNC Computer Aided Architectural Design and Technology     
     

    Employment: in the construction sector, for example as an architectural technologist; trainee site manager, or progression to a Modern Apprenticeship

An interview is required, but this can be held either face to face, or by telephone.
