NQ PERSONAL FITNESS DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 6

This course will give you practical and theory-based skills in fitness, health and sport. You will have the opportunity to lead fitness sessions with young people and work with a range of client groups.

Start date – Aug 2025 

End date –  Jun 2026 

SCQF Level - 6 

Mode –  Full time   

Days: 2 - 3 days per week, Monday to Friday 

Times: 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm   

Duration: 1 Year

Why choose this course

The course will give you expertise, skills and qualifications for work in the sport and fitness sector. We work closely with local employers: you will visit a range of fitness settings to take part in various classes. 

This gives valuable industry experience and give you an introduction to gym instructor Level 1.

The college is an active member of Scottish Student Sport, and we have sports teams in football, rugby, basketball and badminton, so you will have the opportunity to represent the college in various external leagues. 

Entry requirements

  • Three National 5 qualifications or equivalent at grade C or above, one of which must be English 

We welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience. 

An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required which you will do through the college if offered a place. 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Where it leads

    Education: HNC fitness, health and exercise; HNC coaching and developing sport; other HNC courses at West Lothian College. 

    Employment: Sport and fitness leader, leisure-club host, community centre activity leader and more. 

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview/course information session, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview includes: 

  • An introduction from the course tutor 
  • An individual interview 
  • Short written task 

Please bring your practical kit and be prepared to take part in fitness testing activities. Also bring evidence of your qualifications and/or employment references.
