This exciting new course has an increased focus on the use of digital and social media techniques in marketing communications and is designed to provide you with the skills and competencies which will allow you to pursue a range of opportunities in employment, professional development and further study. 

This course will give you an understanding of fundamental marketing theory and you will explore aspects of social media marketing, advertising, public relations and branding.  

You will work with partners and industry professionals to ensure that you are prepared to work in marketing, advertising and public relations.  On completion of the course, you will have a strong portfolio of examples to use for progression to further study and share with employers.  You can progress to HNC Marketing Communications at West Lothian College. 

  • What the course includes

    You will cover core marketing, advertising and digital subjectsMarketing an Introduction, Social Media Literacy, Advertising: An Introduction, Behavioural Aspects of Marketing, Branding an Introduction, Marketing Research Practice, Digital Media  

    We will have speakers from industry, visits and workshops organised throughout the academic year and you will work with employers using live briefs where you have the opportunity to present to industry experts and decision makers.  The course will get you digitally ready to market opportunities for yourself and others.

  • National 5 business management or relevant NQ/NC units or
  • National 5 in English or communication or
  • National 5 information technology or relevant NQ/NC units
  • Commitment to learning

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Where it leads

    Education: On achievement of this course, you will be able to progress into HNC Marketing Communications.  

    Employment: You may gain employment at a junior level in: Marketing, Sales Administration, Market Research, Public Relations and Events Management.  

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview for this course, plan to be in college for around three hours. We ask you to prepare a written task at home before the interview and to bring this with you on the day. If you need help with this, please contact us by emailing

  • Presentation from the course lecturer 
  • Interview with the lecturer and another course tutor
  • Speaking about the task you prepared (can be viewed here) for 5 minutes; followed by some questions from the interviewers.
