NQ Level 5 Sport and Fitness

This course is suitable for individuals who wish to begin pursuing a career in sports and fitness.

Start date – August 2026 
End date –  June 2027 
SCQF Level - 5 
Mode –  Full time   

Days: 2 - 3 Days per week, Monday to Friday 
Times:  9am – 12pm and 1pm to 4pm  
Duration: 1 Year

The course is a combination of practical based units across a range of sport and fitness disciplines, combined with underpinning theory.

  • What this course includes

    The course includes a range of units that will develop your practical skills and understanding of key concepts including;  

    • Sporting Activity Participation and Performance (Various sports)  
    • Teamwork through Sport & Recreation Activities  
    • Developing Leadership within Physical Activity  
    • Resistance and Circuit Training

You will do practical sessions in our modern and spacious facilities including endurance fitness suite, games halls and dance studio. There will also be opportunities to take part in industry related workshops and events.

The college is an active member of Scottish Student Sport (SSS) and we have sports teams in football, rugby, basketball and badminton, so you will have the opportunity to represent the college in various external leagues. 

Entry requirements

  • Three National 4 qualifications or equivalent, at grade C or above, one of which must be English 

We welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience. 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Where will it lead?

    Education: Level 6 Sports Coaching or Level 6 Fitness Development at West Lothian College. 

    Employment:  Opportunities for assistant coaching roles with local clubs and organisations.

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview/course information session, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview includes: 

  • 1-1 Interview 
  • Group sporting activity session
