NQ ACCESS TO TEACHING LEVEL 6 (SWAP)

This course is for adults who want to return to education after a break of three or more years (or five years if you already hold SCQF level 6 or HNC/D qualifications). It is designed to help you progress to a degree course in primary/secondary teaching and other subjects including psychology, sociology, social work and criminology

This course gives you the unique opportunity of being able to complete a placement at a local primary or secondary school.

This experience involves shadowing a teacher in the classroom enabling you to gain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary for a successful career in teaching.

As part of this course you will also gain a qualification to work as a Pupil Support Worker at the end of your studies.

Why choose this course

SWAP courses are designed for adult returners to gain both academic and practical skills necessary for higher level study.

Since the first pilot of SWAP in 1987 more than 35,000 adults have taken the SWAP route to return to study. SWAP programmes, usually based in local colleges, are designed specifically for adults who lack the required entry qualifications to get into university.

As part of the SWAP East programme you can apply for courses at Stirling University, Queen Margaret University, Heriot Watt University, Napier University and the University of Dundee. You can also apply for a range of HNC courses including Childhood Practice and Social Services.

 

Entry requirements

  • Must have been out of formal education for at least three years, or five years if you have Higher or equivalent qualifications
  • Successful applicants will be invited to take part in a maths skills profiling session with some applicants being invited to a Skills Boost course during the summer months as preparation for the course
  • An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required which you will do through the college if offered a place.
  • Candidates educated to degree level are ineligible for this course

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.
