NPA Exercise and Fitness Leadership

This course will give you practical and theory-based skills in fitness, health and sport. You will have the opportunity to lead fitness sessions with young people and work with a range of client groups.

  • What the course includes

    The course will develop your knowledge and understanding of what is required to work in the fitness industry. Units you will undertake will include Circuit Training and Free Weight Training to understand how the body works in relation to different training styles and methods.

We work closely with local employers and you may visit a range of fitness settings to take part in various classes. This gives valuable industry experience and will give you an insight into what it means to be a gym instructor.

Entry requirements

Learners wishing to access this Level 6 course must be able to show they have at least three National 5 qualifications or equivalent at grade C or above, one of which must be English, or be able to demonstrate they are performing well at SCQF L5 if no exams have been undertaken. An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required which you will do through the college if offered a place. If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

  • Where will it lead?


    The award is designed to allow candidates to develop knowledge and skills in the areas which most interest them and to create a better pathway into the HNC courses in Fitness and Coaching. Learners would also be able to access the Level 6 courses in Personal Fitness Development or Sports Performance, to complete the full level 6 course before progressing to HNC level study.



    As the fitness industry is becoming more regulated, It is important that candidates are prepared as well as they can be to allow skills to be developed within college to transfer into the work place. Roles such as Fitness Instructor, Personal Trainer the HNC/D programme.

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview/course information session, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview includes:

  • An introduction from the course tutor
  • An individual interview
  • Short written task
  • Please bring your practical kit and be prepared to take part in fitness testing activities.
  • Also bring evidence of your qualifications and/or employment references.
