This course is for those who want to pursue a career in the construction industry, predominantly within the Carpentry and Joinery discipline.

The course develops your skills and knowledge in the various activities found predominantly in the construction of domestic property as well as providing an understanding of the other disciplines found within the construction industry. You will develop practical skills in both workshop- based bench joinery as well as in a simulated site environment.

  • What the course includes

    The course includes: 

    • Practical subjects centred around the trade of carpentry and joinery 
    • Emphasis on project work: design, plan and manufacture both on an individual basis as well as a team basis for some of the projects 
    • Safety, communication, information technology, problem solving, team-working and numeracy

Entry requirements

  • Successfully passed a Level 4 Construction course previously OR have theory and practical experience at Level 5 (practical woodworking or craft skills)
  • Numeracy Level 5 and Communication Level 5

Those without the above qualifications, but have relevant life or work experience are encouraged to apply.

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

  • Where it leads

    This course can lead to a next level of study, such as pre-apprenticeship carpentry and joinery, or to employment- such as an apprenticeship in the construction industry.

Interview will involve a practical skills test and a group interview. Please bring with you copies of your previous qualifications. This is likely be to a phone or online interview
