This course is for students who want to develop creativity and skills in media, including digital media, digital animation, portfolio development, writing, visual communication, art, photography and events. This course is practical and prepares students for further study in a specialist area.

Why choose this course

You will be guided and supported by our skilled teaching team, and when you complete it, you’ll gain entry on to NC level 6 or HNC in one of the specialist areas. The course develops an awareness of the opportunities and range of employment within the creative industries. Candidates are able to develop practical skills alongside employability skills, and the attitudes needed to work in the creative industries.

Entry requirements

The college applies some discretion but it helps if you possess one of the following:

  • Three National 4 awards (or equivalent) in subjects such as media, art, ICT
  • NQ access to creative industries
  • A portfolio of digital work showing aptitude for one or more of the areas covered by the course

We encourage students with work experience to apply.

    Where it leads

    Education: further study at various levels, for example, media, English, computing, photography, events, and art and design; NC at level 6 or HNC at West Lothian College or elsewhere.

    Employment: introductory level employment within the wide range of creative industries.

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview, plan to be in college for around three hours. The interview involves:

  • A short presentation from the course lecturer
  • Written task (because writing effectively is central to this course)
  • Individual interview with the lecturer and another course tutor
