NC CHILDHOOD PRACTICE LEVEL 6

This course is suitable for those looking for a first-level qualification in childhood practice. It allows you to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) at support worker level. It also allows you to consider options for further study at HNC level.

  • What the course includes

    The course includes:

    • Child development to support knowledge and understanding of all aspects of development for children and young people, pre-birth to 18.
    • Children and young people with additional support needs, investigating different needs and appropriate resources to support children’s development.
    • Rights and entitlements, which includes safeguarding of children and young people and the policies that need to be followed.
    • Supporting the curriculum, this includes knowledge and understanding of the current curriculum delivered in early years and school provision to support your understanding when in placement.
    • Language, Literacy and Numeracy, this includes knowledge and understanding of how you can practically support children with these skills to enhance development.
    • Practical units including play, placement and outdoor learning.

This course will give you the chance of work experience in a nursery and primary school settings and practical experience within our purpose-built playroom and outdoor classroom. There are additional experiences available through-out the year including working with nursery and school children on campus, opportunities to attend our conferences where you will attend workshops delivered by various professionals relevant to your chosen career. It will also give you the opportunity to consider the different options of childcare provision. 

Entry requirements

  • Three National 5 qualifications at grade C or above, one of which must be English

We welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience.

An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required. This will be completed with the college if offered a place. 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.
