This course is designed to provide you with an excellent grounding in all aspects of accounting practice and business principles to prepare you for further study and the world of work.

Content covered includes financial accounting, management accounting, wages and salaries, recording financial transactions, preparing final accounts along with core skills and personal development units. A mandatory work placement is part of the course, giving you the chance to work in a real accounting-based business as part of your qualification.

  • What the course includes

    The course includes accounting and administration skills, communication, information and communications technology (ICT) and numeracy.

It introduces you to accounting practice and business principles, and gives you work experience through placements and/or volunteering. Experienced lecturers with a wide range of industry experience will support and guide you throughout the course.

Entry requirements

  • National 4/Standard Grades/Intermediate 1 in communication (or similar) or relevant work experience
  • Commitment to learning, self-motivation and teamwork
  • Microsoft Excel skills (we will check these at interview and, if you need to learn these, we will offer you a place on our summer school to do this before the course starts)
  • Where it leads

    Education: level 6 and 7 courses such as HNC Accounting, NC Business level 6      

    Employment: in accounting, clerical, business and administrative roles

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview for this course, plan to be in college for around three hours. We ask you to prepare a written task at home before the interview and to bring this with you on the day. If you need help with this, please contact us. The task is to find out about a role in the accounting industry and what it involves. Prepare a one-sided A4 document (summary/poster/presentation) and bring it with you.

The interview involves:

  • Presentation from the course lecturer
  • Interview with the lecturer and another course tutor
  • Speaking about the task you prepared for a couple of minutes; followed by some questions from the interviewers
  • Short piece of work to check your communication, numeracy and IT skills
