The course will give you a broad experiential introduction to clinical and non-clinical roles in the health sector, and the teamworking and practical skills involved.

Days: Tuesday and Thursday

Times: 1:30pm – 4:30pm

On this course, learners produce a CV and take part in a mock interview, and they investigate different job roles available in the health sector, taking part in supervised role plays and considering health and safety, and risk.

They look at how technology and pharmaceuticals are used in diagnosis and treatment. They learn how the cardiovascular system works and practise taking measurements and providing basic practical life support.

Learners look at health and lifestyle issues, and how they could apply and provide help and advice in a health sector role.

  • What the course includes

    The National 5 course is made up of the following four units:

    1. Working in the Health Sector
    2. Life Sciences Industry and the Health Sector
    3. Improving Health and Wellbeing
    4. Physiology of the Cardiovascular System

    You will be taught by means of practical based activities and classroom-based theory lessons by a college lecturer.

    Study takes the form of:

    • Individual research
    • Group activities
    • Practical activities
    • Watching videos
    • Through reviewing course hand-outs or textbooks provided by the College.

    You will develop key interpersonal skills, as well as confidence when it comes to communication, organisation and planning.

    Throughout the course you will be offered an opportunity to review and identify how your skills and knowledge are developing, and will be expected to demonstrate:

    • Regular attendance and good timekeeping;
    • A professional attitude and an interest in healthcare and a desire to support others in the future;
    • A willingness and commitment to learning;
    • Planning, preparation and research skills;
    • An ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with others;
    • Problem solving skills.

    To achieve the full award, you must attend regularly and successfully complete all units. Assessment will be based on tests and case studies, along with project work and a portfolio.

    The course will show on your final SQA certificate as a National 5 qualification.

Entry requirements

An interest in healthcare and an ability to work at National 5 Level.

It is expected that you will have achieved some National 4’s including English.

  • Where does this course lead

    You could progress onto the Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF L6 if you are still at school or a fulltime college course in health and social care.

Interview Arrangements

You will be interviewed at college during school time and this will be at a pre-arranged time. This will involve a group task and 1:1 conversation with a lecturer.
