Level 6 Sports Coaching

Newly structured course suitable for individuals who wish to pursue a career in sports coaching.

The course is a combination of practical based units across a range of sports and theory which supports a range of coaching elements. 

When you complete the course, you will gain a National Progression Award (NPA) in Sports Coaching at Level 6.  

This qualification is your launchpad to the future, giving you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to take your next step forward in sports coaching.

    What the course includes

    • Learning essential coaching skills, starting with understanding yourself, others, and the fundamentals of coaching. 
    • Develop self-awareness to manage your roles and responsibilities as a coach, under minimal supervision. 
    • Gain practical skills, like preparing a safe coaching environment. Setting up equipment, addressing participants' needs, and working effectively within a coaching team. 
    • Opportunity to gain National Governing Body coaching awards in various sports. 

    By course completion you will be confident in planning, delivering, and reviewing your own coaching sessions.

Entry requirements

  • Interest in sport, physical activity and coaching is a must  
  • Three National 5 qualifications or equivalent at grade C or above, one of which must be English 

We welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience.  

An application to the PVG scheme (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) is required which you will do through the college if offered a place. 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Education: HNC Coaching and Developing Sport at West Lothian College  

    Employment: Various roles within sports coaching and health and fitness. Previous students have gained employment with local authority and private organisations. 

Interview Arrangements

If you are invited for an interview/course information session, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview includes: 

  • An introduction from the course tutor 
  • An individual interview 
  • Short written task 
  • Practical activity 

Please bring your practical kit and be prepared to take part in a practical session. Also bring evidence of your qualifications and/or employment references.
