This course provides a grounding for those wanting to work in the health and social care professions. It gives various options for progression, and involves classroom study and work experience.

    What the course includes

    The course includes:

    • Health and safety
    • Sociology (How social influences impact on care)
    • Psychology (How human development and behaviour impact on care)
    • Roles and responsibilities
    • Values and principles in care
    • Introduction to Mental Health

    You will get the chance to learn about various health and social care settings.

What are the entry requirements?

  • No formal qualifications
  • Applicants must be eligible for PVG scheme membership
  • Where can this course take me?

    Education: SCQF level 5 courses in health and social care or other level 5 courses at West Lothian College.

    Employment: in health and social care settings as a support worker.

     

Interview arrangements

An information session which includes:

  • Individual discussion
  • Group discussion

You should plan to be in college for around two hours. Please bring evidence of qualifications already gained and a pre-prepared personal statement (maximum of 200 words) which includes your:

  • Qualifications
  • Work experience/volunteering experience/life experience
  • Personal qualities and interests
  • Reasons for applying for the course
