The course provides an excellent introduction to a career in the trades for energy efficiency in homes, teaching you the practical skills needed to progress to further study in the area.

Based within the construction and plumbing sectors, this course gives students the opportunity to make sure a career in the built environment is right for you before choosing further study or an apprenticeship.

  • What the course includes

    You will develop practical skills in the construction and plumbing workshop environment, and although most of the time will be spent on practical activities, you will also learn the principles in the classroom. 

    • Installing internal wall insulation 
    • Installing external wall insulation 
    • Alternative home heating systems 
    • Energy efficiency measure 
    • Grey water reuse 
    • Solar thermal energy

Entry requirements

  • You should have National 3 Mathematics, English and a Science subject 
  • Any relevant experience will help your application 
  • A desire to work in the built environment 

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Further study within the industry or related fields, including the NPA construction, Built Environment programmes at West Lothian College, and/or an apprenticeship within the construction industry.
