This course is an introduction to the built environment industry and looking at how homes can be made more energy efficient, and the course which is mainly practical is delivered over 12 weeks.

The course provides an excellent introduction to a career in the trades for energy efficiency in homes, teaching you the practical skills needed to progress to further study in the area.

Based within the construction and plumbing workshop, this course gives students the opportunity to make sure a career in the built environment is right for you before choosing further study or an apprenticeship.

  • What the course includes

    You will develop practical skills in the construction and plumbing workshop environment, and although most of the time will be spent on practical activities, you will also learn the principles in the classroom.

    • Installing external wall insulation
    • Alternative home heating systems
    • Energy efficiency measure
    • Grey water reuse
    • Solar thermal energy

Entry requirements

  • You should have National 3 Mathematics, English and a Science subject

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

  • Where it leads

    Further study within the industry or related fields, including the NPA construction, Built Environment programmes at West Lothian College, and/or an apprenticeship within the construction industry.

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for interview you will be required to undertake a short practical skills test and group interview.

This interview may be conducted by phone or online.
