HND CHILDHOOD PRACTICE

Building on the skills obtained as part of the HNC, this course allows you to improve your career prospects by studying at a more advanced level and to progress to SCQF level 9 courses. Level 9 is required by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) for managers in the sector. 

 

 

  • What the course includes

    The course includes: 

    • Pedagogical approaches 
    • Team-working and leadership  
    • Integrated working and collaborative practice 
    • Two SVQ level 4 units relating to leading on the Creativity and Communication of children and young people 
    • Opportunity to lead and implement projects involving children and young people

You will gain work experience from work placements, and practical experience in our purpose-built playroom and outdoor classroom. 

Entry requirements

  • HNC Childhood Practice Group Award (or equivalent HNC on the SQA framework) with Graded Unit at C grade or above plus 3 additional units at Level 7/8.  
  • Experience in a childcare/related setting 
  • IT skills (for assessments) desirable 

We welcome applications from people with relevant life and work experience. 

An Enhanced Disclosure Scotland application is required. This will be carried out with the college if a place is offered.  

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.

    Where it leads

    Education: PDA Level 9 or degree-level courses. West Lothian College has an exclusive articulation agreement with advance standing into year 2 of the BA (Hons) Education Studies (Primary) at Queen Margaret University or year 3 of BA (Hons) Education Studies (Non-teaching). These spaces are limited and applicants who submit a competitive application will be considered. 

    Employment: In childcare with statutory, voluntary or private organisations including schools, nurseries, creches and family centres. Previous students have found employment with West Lothian Council Early Years Settings and several private nurseries. 

Interview arrangements

If we invite you for an interview, plan to be in college for around two hours. The interview consists of:
