HNC MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

This exciting new course has an increased focus on the use of digital and social media techniques in marketing communications and is designed to provide you with the skills and competencies which will allow you to pursue a range of opportunities in employment, professional development and further study.  

You will work with partners and industry professionals to ensure that you are prepared to work in marketing, advertising and public relations.  On completion of the course, you will have a strong portfolio of examples to use for progression to further study and share with employers.

    What the course includes

    You will cover core marketing, advertising and digital subjects and will complete a project-based graded unit project.  Units include; Marketing: An Introduction, Marketing Research Theory, Digital Marketing Communications:  Website Development, Digital Marketing Communications:  Content Development, Digital Imaging, Advertising: The Advertising IndustryPublic relations: Principles & PracticeMedia Analysis: Advertisements. 

    We will have speakers from industry, visits and workshops organised throughout the academic year and you will work with employers using live briefs where you have the opportunity to present to industry experts and decision makers.  The course will get you digitally ready to market opportunities for yourself and others.

Why choose this course

The course covers all aspects of marketing and focusses on the digital skills which are an essential functions within a business, large corporations, small business and those who are self-employed.  We have excellent resources within our department; brand new digital suite which includes mac computers, creative cloud and brand new video and editing equipment.  We have an articulation agreement in place with Queen Margaret University allowing you to progress into BA(Hons) PR & Marketing Communications or other colleges where the HND in Marketing/HND Advertising and PR would be a natural progression.  

Entry Requirements

  • One Higher (such as englishbusiness, administration, modern studies, media) 
  • Internal candidates: completed NC business level 6 
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in a related subject 
  • Work experience may allow entry, depending on interview 
  • Microsoft Excel skills (we will check these at interview and, if you need to learn these, we will guide you to additional learning before the course starts) 
  • Where it leads

    Education: On achievement of this course, you will be able to progress into HND Marketing, HND Advertising and PR at another college or BA(Hons) PR & Marketing Communications at Queen Margaret University. 

    Employment: You may gain employment at a junior level in: Marketing, Sales Administration, Market Research, Public Relations and Events Management 

Interview Arrangements

If you are invited for an interview for this course, plan to be in college for around three hours. We ask you to prepare a written task at home before the interview and to bring this with you on the day. If you need help with this, please contact us by emailing enquiries@west-lothian.ac.uk 

The interview involves: 

  • Presentation from the course lecturer 
  • Interview with the lecturer and another course tutor 
  • Speaking about the task you prepared (can be viewed here) for 5 minutes; followed by some questions from the interviewers.
