Creative digital content - from film & video to podcasts to social media to marketing and advertising - is vital in helping individuals and businesses communicate their messages.

This course aims to prepare you to work in a variety of creative digital media industries.  

Start date – August 2026
End date – June 2027

Mode - Full time 

Days:  Monday, Wednesday and Friday 
Times: 9am - 4pm and 9am - 12pm 
Duration: 35 weeks

 

  • What the course includes

    In this course you will create several digital media projects – videos, podcasts, social media marketing campaigns – working on your own projects, and as part of teams to learn about the skills and roles required to work in today’s digital creative industries.  

    You will learn about video production, digital multimedia, online marketing, script writing, digital video journalism and how to best sell your skills in a competitive global digital economy.  

    We are partnering with national and West Lothian employers and organisations to offer real-world learning opportunities to demonstrate your skills development and aid your understanding of how to apply your learning.  

    In the final part of the course you will undertake a creative Graded Unit project of your own choosing, where you will plan, produce and evaluate your work, and showcase your year’s work in an end-of-year event.  

    Successful completion of the course results in the award of an HNC in Creative Industries: Media and Communication.

The course offers you opportunities to develop a wide range of employable creative skills and knowledge, helping you choose your future pathways through a variety of creative industries, as well as developing your transferable employability skills such as resilience, reliability, team working and communication.  

All our students develop a portfolio of creative digital work throughout the course by working with real-world clients, which they then use to demonstrate their abilities to prospective employers, or as the basis for applications to further study at HND or degree level.  

We work in partnership with the BBC The Social programme where our students gain invaluable experience working with industry leaders and producing compelling audio-visual content for inclusion on the BBC’s online platform. 

We regularly have guest speakers from the Creative Industries, who relate their experiences (and stories) to our students to help with their development as potential digital creative professionals. 

In previous years, many of our students have gone on to success at honours degree level at university, and/or have gained employment working in broadcasting and other creative industries in the UK and in the USA and have won awards at international film festivals.  

Entry requirements

  • One Higher (English or Media studies)   
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in Creative & Digital Media, or in a related subject   
  • Work experience may allow entry, depending on interview.

    Where it leads

    Education: On achievement of this course, you can progress into HND or BA (Hons) programmes in Film & Media, Digital Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations, TV & Radio Production, Journalism, or Media Studies, at many Scottish universities such as Glasgow Caledonian University, Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University, University of Stirling, Napier University, and Queen Margaret University.   

    Employment: You may gain employment at entry level in: Digital Marketing, Journalism, Film and TV production, Radio Production, Games development, Marketing, Public Relations, Events Management, and many other UK Creative Industries.  

Interview arrangements

Although we have specific entry requirements, entry onto the course is also dependent upon interview performance.    

Applicants are asked to write a short review of a media product at interview. Please let us know beforehand if you require any special arrangements - e.g. coloured paper, laptop, etc.

Questions you may be asked at interview include: 

  • Tell us about your experience of creating digital media products
  • Tell us about what problems arose in previous projects, and how you resolved them
  • Tell us about how you used your strengths when working with others or by yourself on a project
  • Tell us about what challenges you have faced when undertaking group and solo projects, and steps you took to improve your skills

We are planning to have an exciting and engaging induction/interview event where students will attend a mock lesson and work together to create a media product to a brief, as well as an informal discussion to find out what you are looking for in the course/college and answer any questions.
