This course gives students the chance to learn about the different sectors within the business industry. Equivalent to first year of degree study, we offer this course as the first year of a three-year programme which will allow you to graduate with the Edinburgh Napier University business management degree. It is suitable for students progressing from level 6 courses, including school leavers looking for an industry-recognised qualification before university, or who have relevant work experience.

  • What the course includes

    In year one, you will cover core business subjects, theories of managing and motivating people, business accounting, the economy, marketing, IT business applications and human resource management. There will be an exam to assess knowledge and skills gained.

Why choose this course

The course covers all aspects of business management plus the chance to specialise in human resources (HR) or marketing for two units. You will gain work experience from placements and/or volunteering. There is also the opportunity to progress to degree-level study at West Lothian College (Edinburgh Napier University Business Management Degree).

Entry requirements

  • One Higher (such as business, administration, English, modern studies)
  • Internal candidates: completed NC business level 6
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in a related subject
  • Work experience may allow entry, depending on interview
  • Microsoft Excel skills (we will check these at interview and, if you need to learn these, we will offer you a place on our summer school to do this before the course starts)
  • First Aid

    Where it leads

    Education: HND business or further study elsewhere. Students who have continued their studies have gone on to work in marketing, HR, finance and operations management.

    Employment: in a wide range of sectors; also supports those wishing to start their own business.

Interview arrangements

If you are invited for an interview for this course, plan to be in college for around three hours. We ask you to prepare a written task at home before the interview and to bring this with you on the day. If you need help with this, please contact us by emailing

  • Presentation from the course lecturer
  • Interview with the lecturer and another course tutor
  • Speaking about the task you prepared (can be viewed here) for 5 minutes; followed by some questions from the interviewers
