This course is for those wanting to develop their skills in building measurement and cost studies, environmental building science, building services, construction materials and specifications, as well as sustainability and modern methods of construction.

You will gain work-related skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills; you will meet employers through site visits and work placements; and work with technicians and university staff at Edinburgh Napier University in practical sampling and testing labs.

  • What the course includes

    The course is classroom-based with practical experience gained from workshops, field trips and site visits. It includes:

    • Building design and technology
    • Building services
    • Computer-aided drawing
    • Health and safety
    • Construction materials
    • Mechanics for construction
    • Modern construction methods
    • Sustainability in the building industry.

Entry requirements

  • NC in a related discipline or
  • Minimum one Higher level pass and relevant passes at Standard Grade or
  • Credit/National 5 in relevant subjects, including science/technology or
  • SVQ in construction or related discipline or
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in a related subject or
  • Craft qualification combined with appropriate further study before/along with HNC programme

We consider relevant industrial experience/other qualifications on an individual basis.

  • Where it leads

    Education: HND in architectural technology, building surveying, construction management or quantity surveying; direct entry into year 2 of Edinburgh Napier University's construction degree courses; SVQ level 3 and 4 construction: technical modern apprenticeships.

    Employment: supervisory or technician post in the construction industry.

Interview arrangements

If we want to interview you, we will email or write to you with the date and time. You should plan to be in college for up to three hours. Bring evidence of any qualifications or employment references.

The interview involves:

  • Arrival, welcome and course overview
  • Individual aptitude tests
  • Individual interview and the chance to discuss the course with two members of staff from the department
