Why choose this course

You’ll get a good grounding in accounting practice and business principles, and work experience through placements and/or volunteering. Experienced lecturers with a wide range of industry experience will support and guide you throughout the course.

Entry requirements

  • Pass at C grade or above in a relevant Higher such as business management, maths or accounting or
  • Relevant group award at National 5/Intermediate 2 or NC Accounting or
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in a related subject
  • Those with relevant work experience should apply and will be assessed at interview
  • Internal candidates – completion of all course units (NC accounting level 5/business management level 6)

If English is not your first language, ESOL Level 5 is an entry requirement for this course.


  • Where it leads

    Education: HND accounting at West Lothian College or university. The course allows direct entry to Heriot Watt University to second year on the MA in accountancy and finance.

    Employment: posts such as trainee accountant or accounts technician and other roles within accounting/business. Previous students have found employment with West Lothian Council,and Charles River Labs.

Interview Arrangements

If you are invited for an interview for this course, this will either be on a video call or in college and may take up to three hours. We ask you to prepare a written task at home before the interview and to share this with your interviewer on the day. If you need help with this, please contact us. The task is to find out about a role in the accounting industry and what it involves. Prepare a one-sided A4 document (summary/poster/presentation) and bring it with you. 

The interview involves: 

  • Presentation from the course lecturer 
  • Interview with the lecturer and another course tutor 
  • Speaking about the task you prepared for a couple of minutes; followed by some questions from the interviewers 
  • Short piece of work to check your communication, numeracy and IT skills
