This programme is delivered over one year and incorporates classroom-based study with work-based learning, to prepare you for entry to the workplace or fulltime Further or Higher Education.

Times: 1:30pm – 4:30pm

Duration: 1 year

Currently 7.2% of the Scottish workforce work in Social Care and 9.8% of the workforce within Health Care, with one of the largest employers being the NHS with around 26,000 being employed within NHS Lothian.

There is currently a shortage of health and social care professionals across the country.

By undertaking this course, you will be prepared for entry to the workplace or full-time further education. You will be prepared to support people living independently in the community, residential setting or within nursing and a health care environment.

  • What the course includes

    The Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Healthcare includes: 

    • A National Progression Award (NPA) in Social Services and Healthcare at SCQF level 6 
    • Four units of an SCQF level 6 in Social Services and Healthcare 
    • A substantial work placement 

    Learning and teaching is a mix between NPA classroom-based teaching integrated with vocational SVQ learning which is contextualised to placement.

Entry requirements

  • Capable of working at Higher Level (SCQF L6) with a good level of written and spoken English 
  • Four National 5s (including English and biology if they want to progress to Nursing) 
  • Interest in learning about the sector 
  • Applicants must be eligible for PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) scheme membership and must not be barred or under consideration for listing (criminal record check)
  • Excellent school attendance record
  • It is essential you are able to support others

    Education:  

    • Modern Apprenticeship in social services
    • As the FA (Foundation Apprenticeships) is the equivalent of a Higher if accompanied by an additional Higher progression to HNC Healthcare Practice (as long as you also have National 5 Biology or equivalent) or HNC Social Services would be supported
    • Appropriate University courses as part of additional entry criteria 

    Employment:  

    • Employment within care services as a support worker/care assistant/health care support worker. Please note this course is to prepare you for a career in health and social care
