This course is for anyone thinking about a career in healthcare and social services. It gives you the chance to learn skills and gain practical experience valued by employers. You’ll close the gap between the classroom and the workplace, and find out more about the world of work.

Please note, this course is delivered by West Lothian College staff within Inveralmond Community High School. You do not need to be a student at Inveralmond to be able to apply to this course - any necessary travel will be organised by the college and school.

Year 1:
Tuesday 10:25am-11:15am
Wednesday 1:50pm-3:30pm
Thursday 8:45am-10:25am

Year 2:
Placement 1 day per week


  • What the course includes

    The first year of the course covers:

    • Social services in Scotland
    • Safeguarding people
    • Communication in care relationships
    • Safe practice and wellbeing in social services
    • Human development and social influences

    You will complete a National Progression Award (NPA) at SCQF level 6 in social services and healthcare and gain experience of working with care service users.

    In the second year, you will complete the mandatory units of the SVQ in social services and healthcare while on placement, for example in a day centre or residential home for older adults.

    Education: Modern Apprenticeship (fast-track); SVQ 3 in social care/similar; progression to HNC in social care or healthcare; and to degree-level study in health care/social services such as nursing.

    Employment: within healthcare or social services in areas such as occupational therapy, nursing or healthcare support.
