FOUNDATION APPRENTICESHIP IN SCIENTIFIC TECHNOLOGIES - THE JAMES YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL

This course is for anyone looking for the knowledge and skills to enter further study or employment within life-sciences. You’ll close the gap between the classroom and the workplace, and find out more about the world of work.

Please note, this course is delivered by West Lothian College staff within The James Young High School. You do not need to be a student at James Young to be able to apply to this course - any necessary travel will be organised by the college and school.

Tuesday and Thursday 1:30pm-4:30pm (year 1)
Placement 1 day per week (year 2) 
Some Friday pm commitment
Duration: 1 or 2 years

  • What the course includes

    This course covers principles of scientific technologies including:

    • Laboratory safety
    • Mathematics for science
    • Fundamental chemistry: introduction
    • Experimental procedures: science

Entry requirements

  • Four National 5s (one must be in a science-related subject)
  • In 5th year of school on starting the course
  • Interest in learning about the industry
  • Capable of working at level 6 (Higher)
  • Excellent school attendance record
  • Foundation Apprentices

    Where this course leads

    Education: NC level 6 hairdressing.

    Employment: junior role within a hairdressing salon.

Interview arrangements

If we want to interview you, we will send you an interview date by email/letter. You should plan to be in college for about three hours.

You should bring the following to the interview:

  • One suitable reference
  • Photocopied proof of qualifications you hold or are waiting for (for example if you still at school)
  • Passport-sized photograph
  • Handwritten research project (see below)

The interview involves:

  • Welcome and course information
  • Individual interview
  • Practical skills test
  • Written task
  • Research project which we email to you and which you must bring to the interview. This must be handwritten .

We offer places only to applicants who achieve the minimum practical skills test scores and are successful at interview and in the written test.
