ESOL LEVEL 4 & 5

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) helps you to improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in English. 

Studying ESOL will develop your confidence in social and work situations, improve your grammar and vocabulary and allow you to progress to further study or employment. You will enhance your digital and presentation skills over the course of the year through working in pairs and groups.

  • What the course includes

    The course includes ESOL National 4, ESOL National 5, Living in Scotland, ICT and Communication. You will have the opportunity to engage with college staff and other partners to discuss your next steps in study or employment.You will be supported to use your communication skills in a variety of contexts and join in visits to The Scottish Parliament as part of learning about Scottish culture. 

Why choose this course

The course prepares you for further study and prepares you to achieve qualifications at levels 4 and 5. You need to have National 5 ESOL or equivalent for all NQ/NC, HNC and HND study. As part of the course, we will prepare you to sit the ESOL National 5 exam in May.  

Entry requirements

  • Expected to be working at level 3 or above (we will assess this) 
  • Progressing students should have achieved ESOL 3 
  • If you are at beginner level there are other options we can offer you, for example you can access free study with West Lothian Council 
  • Where it leads

    Education: Further study at college or university e.g. progression to Higher ESOL 

    Employment: Various employment opportunities 

Interview arrangements

We will invite you to college to assess your level of English language, this takes around two hours.
