This qualification aims to provide expert guidance to learners wishing to gain knowledge and understanding on Electric Vehicle (EV) charging equipment installation.

This qualification is aimed at practicing electricians interested in understanding how to install the range of equipment and systems available, it covers the specialised installation requirements of electric vehicle charging equipment in public, private and commercial locations and includes exclusive guidance on electrical requirements.

This course will provide candidate with the skills and knowledge to build on their previous experience, so that they can install electric vehicle charging points.

Candidates will learn the key requirements relating to installing this equipment, the advantages and disadvantages of different types of set ups, along with the inspection, testing and commissioning of electric vehicle charging points.

It is recommended that candidates have the following materials before beginning this course:

  • IET Wiring Regulations, Eighteenth edition, BS7671:2018+A2:2022.
  • On-Site Guide (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022), 8th Edition
  • IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation, 5th Edition

Optional material:

  • IET Guidance Note 3 Inspection and Testing 9th Edition

    As the UK strives towards becoming a net-zero economy by 2050, its’ Transport strategy is a key pillar in enabling a successful transition. The transport sector is one of the UK’s largest emitters of CO2 and a major source of air pollution in cities. Decarbonizing transport is therefore a key priority for the UK Government.

This figure is predicted to grow steadily. 

    As the number of battery-electric cars increases so does the need to rapidly expand the electrical vehicle charging (EV charging) infrastructure from circa 35,500 charge points across the UK network to 500,000 charge points by 2030. 

    The growth in electrical vehicle charging (EV charging) infrastructure presents a significant opportunity and the industry must ensure the workforce is skilled to install and maintain this infrastructure safely and efficiently.

What are the entry requirements?

This course is for practising electricians and candidates must hold:

  • Current 18th Edition Wiring Regulations certificate 
  • SVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation at SCQF level 7 or English equivalent (list available on City & Guilds website) 
  • ECS Gold Card  or S/JIB Electrician / Approved Electrician Card
