Foundation Apprenticeship: Scientific Technologies

Time: YEAR 1: 1:30-4:30pm, YEAR 2: all day work placement
Day: YEAR 1: Tuesday and Thursday (some Friday Afternoon commitment), YEAR 2: Tuesday all day
Start Date: June 2018 (in line with commencing new school timetable)
SCQF Level: 6

If you are interested in working in the Life Science industries, this course provides the opportunity to acquire relevant skills that are valued by employers. 

In Year 1 you will complete a NPA at SCQF Level 6 and gain experience working with Life Science employers (Fridays from Feb 2018) The units you will study are:

  • Experimental Procedures: Science
  • Fundamental Chemistry: An Introduction
  • Mathematics for Science
  • Laboratory Safety

In Year 2 you will complete the mandatory units of the SVQ Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities Social Services and Healthcare whilst on placement in a range of settings.

Our Foundation Apprentices will work directly with employers, through industry talks, visits and placements. Companies who have supported our science students in the past are Express Microbiology, IQVIA and the Human Data Science Company.

Aim

Foundation Apprenticeship courses have been developed to create better links between young people, education and employers.These programmes allow learners to experience college while still at school, achieve a qualification equivalent to a higher, and gain relevant hands on work experience.

Entry

We would look for students to meet the below criteria:

  • Achieved or working towards four Nat 5’s - one must be in a Science related subject.
  • In 5th year of school on starting the course
  • Candidates must have an interest in developing greater awareness of the industry
  • Candidates must be capable of working at Level 6 (Higher)
  • An excellent attendance record in school.

Prospects

Possible Further Study Progression Routes:

  • Modern Apprenticeship at SCQF Level 7
  • SVQ 3 in social care or similar
  • Progression to a HNC/D in social care or healthcare
  • Progression to degree level study within health care or social services such as Nursing

Possible Employment Destinations:

  • Laboratory Assistant
  • Clinical Researcher
