David Bold HNC Construction Management
David Bold had been working as a plumber and heating engineer and by all means had established a rewarding career for himself in the sector.
While he enjoyed his role, David was hungry for a new challenge and decided a career in management was the next logical step. He explains:
“After looking online I found the courses on offer at West Lothian College. The HNC Construction Management course jumped out at me as the next logical step in my career path and it also allowed me to continue to work full-time in my role as a plumber while I studied two nights a week.”
As well as the convenience of studying part-time, David had heard from a friend who had studied the course that he would be making the right choice by choosing West Lothian College.
David who is from Edinburgh excelled in the course and achieved an A in his graded unit. He was subsequently accepted into Year 2 of the Construction Project Management course at Heriot Watt University as a direct entrant. This opened a whole new range of opportunities to 36 year old David.
“I studied at Heriot-Watt for three years and found the course to be extremely interesting and enjoyable. I also received the chance to study at a university in Malaysia for six months which was amazing. This fantastic experience and the success that followed is partly down to the Construction Management course at West Lothian College. That is where my journey started and set me on the path to success.”
David would go on to achieve a first class degree and be awarded the Chartered institute of Builders Certificate of Excellence for the most outstanding student in Construction Project Management and the Scottish Building Federation award for the most outstanding student from the Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying degree programme. Upon completion of his studies, David was offered the role of Graduate Project Manager with the Robertson Group, a family-owned construction, infrastructure and support services business where he is currently working on several projects in the health & education sector.
David is a fine example of being able to change your career path and overcoming what many would perceive to be obstacles such as age and balancing work and study. There is no age limit to learning and the flexible learning available at West Lothian College ensures that there is a course to suit shift patterns or other commitments, something David would certainly agree with
“For anyone considering a career change or career development, I would certainly recommend West Lothian College as a starting point. The college and its fantastic staff will guide potential students towards their goals and even though there will be times when you feel that things are getting tough during your studies, (this happened to me several times!) stick with it, believe in yourself and you will overcome the difficult times and the rewards are more than worth it. I am very grateful for the opportunity that West Lothian College gave me and it has truly changed my life in very positive fashion!”
