Chris Tormey HNC Care and Administrative Practice
Chris Tormey had been out of education since 2008 before embarking on a new career path at West Lothian College.
28 year old Chris had worked in retail management before becoming a self-employed personal trainer, but he always had a desire to transition into a career in care with a goal of becoming a mental health nurse.
“I had been considering studying mental health nursing for a while but universities were requiring evidence of recent academic study which is something I didn’t have. I sat back and weighed up my options. I discovered that if you put the work in, college can be a fairly straightforward path into university. With that in mind I applied for HNC Care and Administrative Practice and I was delighted to be offered a place on the course.”
Chris has settled in well to his course despite not having studied in a decade.
“The HNC course is giving me a great foundation to establish the knowledge I need to take me further. I suppose it was a bit daunting to completely change my career path but it was something I always wanted to do and now the time just feels right.”
As the course progresses, Chris is getting ever closer to the next step on his chosen career path. He acknowledges the part West Lothian College has played in his return to education:
“I love studying at West Lothian College. My dream was always to achieve a career in mental health nursing specialising in alcohol and substance abuse, and obviously that requires a degree, but the support I have received from West Lothian College has helped me to prepare for the next step.”
