West Lothian College students support National third sector event

The Gathering” is a coming together of those involved and interested in the third sector in Scotland. Organised by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), the membership body for Scotland’s charities and voluntary organisations, it takes place at the Scottish Exhibition Campus (SEC) in Glasgow in February each year.

It provides an opportunity for charities, community groups and social enterprises to meet with each other, politicians and journalists; networking and learning about the vibrant and expanding third sector.

West Lothian College and the students on the HNC Events course have helped SCVO to organise The Gathering for many years. The SCVO’s internships provide an opportunity for several students to experience and assist in the planning and execution of this important event. With the whole Events class being “on the ground” at the SEC for the final preparations and the event itself helping with registration and co-ordination.

Supported by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, and Angela Constance, Cabinet Secretary for Communities, Social Security and Equalities, 2018 was another busy and very successful year for attendees and exhibitors, such as Stepping Stones for Families, Safe Harbour Inverclyde, Scottish Men’s Sheds Association, Royal Blind Group and many more.

Alex Thomson, Events & Training Manager, SCVO said;

“I would like to say a massive thank you to West Lothian College Events students who assisted us at the Gathering over the 3 days. Their hard work, professionalism and enthusiasm shone through. They were responsible for registering and giving information to over 2,800 visitors who attended throughout the duration of the event. They also assisted our 63 event hosts and 108 exhibitors. We really couldn’t have made the event the success it was without the college students involvement. Everything ran so smoothly and feedback from everyone was so positive. There was also great team-working from the students with the SCVO staff, staff across the SEC and everyone involved in putting an event of this scale on. We are grateful for the key part the students all played.”
