West Lothian College Foundation Apprentice wins local award

Conor Jackson recently completed his Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering with West Lothian College. Due to sheer determination and enthusiasm, Conor completed the programme which usually takes two years to complete, in just one year – also completing a placement with a large West Lothian house builder during his course.

Conor has now progressed onto an HNC in Civil Engineering at the college and is taking the next step in his career. Due to his recent success, and following excellent feedback from his placement employer, Conor was recognised as Foundation Apprentice of the year in the 2018 Stellar Awards.

The Stellar Awards celebrate educational excellence in West Lothian, with awards handed out in categories recognising achievements covering all aspects of the education curriculum.

Pupils and students were joined by teachers, council staff, carers and parents for an afternoon of entertainment and achievement at Howden Park Centre in Livingston on Friday 21 September.

On the day prizes were handed out in categories including, academic achievement, Foundation Apprentice of the year, STEM, literacy, the creative arts, numeracy, sport, health and wellbeing and groups and community heroes were acknowledged.

The event was compered by James Cameron, West Lothian Council's Head of Education (Learning, Policy and Resources) with a dance performance from the Senior Dance Team from Inveralmond Community High School.

Speaking of the award, Conor's lecturer Julie Hyslop said: "We are delighted for Conor and his achievement in Foundation Apprenticeship Excellence. Studying at West Lothian College really suits Conor's way of learning and gaining this award will be a real boost to his aspiration to go to University after he achieves his HNC in Civil Engineering."
