Reece Main chose to combine the Foundation Apprenticeship (FA) in IT Software Development with the other subjects he is studying at Armadale Academy as he knew it would be something he would love learning about.

“I chose the FA as I am really interested in software development and I knew doing this course would mean I would be doing things I really enjoyed.”

The FA allows students to get hands on with their learning and Reece has particularly enjoyed this side of the course.

“The most enjoyable thing I have done throughout my time at college so far was making and programming Lego robots. I liked this informal way of learning how to use the iPad or computers to program these Lego robots and it was really great fun.”

Although Reece is doing really well in his course, he acknowledges that it is often challenging.

“The most challenging part of the course so far has been the coding part. That’s the unit I have found most difficult but the lecturers are really supportive and being able to ask for help whenever I need it has got me through.”

The FA includes a work placement to give students experience within the workplace and boost their CV. Reece is carrying out his placement in NowNow Café within The Centre. As a new business, they didn’t have a website so Reece is building this from scratch and enjoying the experience.

“It’s good to be able to get work experience and to put into practice the skills we learnt in class. I'm really enjoying building a website from scratch”

Reece will finish his Foundation Apprenticeship in summer and he plans to progress into the HNC Web Development at West Lothian College.
