Learning styles
Discover which learning style suits you best. Here are some tips on how to use your learning styles to help you learn.

What are learning styles?

Learning styles are simply different approaches or ways of learning.

The three most common:

1. Visual Learning... learning through seeing

These learners need to see the lecturer’s body language and facial expression to fully understand the content of a lesson. They may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, videos, hand-outs, illustrated text books etc. During a lecture or classroom discussion, visual learners like to take lots of detailed notes to help them absorb the information.

2. Auditory Learning... learning through hearing

Auditory learners learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through and listening to what others have to say. They interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to the tone of voice, pitch speed and other nuances. Written information may have little meaning until it is heard. These learners often benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder.

3. Tactile/Kinaesthetic Learning... learning through moving, touching and doing

Tactile/Kinaesthetic people learn best through a hands-on approach, actively exploring the physical world around them. They may find it hard to sit still for long periods and may become distracted by their need for activity and exploration.

Most people use a combination of the three styles but usually there is one that is more dominant.
