NC Art and Design

Level of Qualification: Intermediate 2/Higher
SCQF Level: 5/6

This course offers you the opportunity to develop practical art skills. It is a good option for individuals who have a keen interest in the arts, but may not have a formal art qualification from school. Mature students who would like to develop art skills or plan to apply to art college in the future may also benefit from the course.

Duration

One academic year. You will need to attend College for 18 hours of variable, timetabled study per week, plus commit to undertake further self study of approximately 6 hours per week.

Aim

You will gain knowledge and expertise in various drawing and painting techniques, develop three-dimensional projects and learn about contemporary art and artists. Development of core skills in information technology and communication form a mandatory part of this practical, hands-on course.

Opportunities

The projects that you undertake are highly practical in nature. The course is geared towards helping you to develop the creative portfolio required for progression on to the HNC Contemporary Art Practice course or, in some cases, to employment.

Entry

  • A satisfactory secondary education is required and candidates should be able to demonstrate good communication skills and creative ability. Standard Grades at General level or above in English and Art or related subjects.
  • Mature applicants do not need formal qualifications but should be able to show evidence of creative endeavour in drawing, painting, etc. through a portfolio of work.
  • Selection for the course will be by interview and all applicants must show evidence of recent drawing/painting work.

For those about to leave school you will not currently be able to apply online and you should ask your guidance teacher for an appliction form.  

Prospects

Education: Possible progression to HNC Contemporary Art Practice course. This will require a formal application and interview.

Employment: Opportunities include roles in the community art services, graphic design and a range of art based careers.
