HNC Contemporary Art Practice

Level of Qualification: HNC
SCQF Level: 7

This course will help you to develop your own artistic skills, both practically and intellectually. It is suitable for individuals wanting to progress from either the NC Art and Design course or the NQ Graphic Design, Illustration and Animation course. It is also an excellent option for school leavers who have passed Higher or Advanced Higher Art & Design and wish to apply to an Art College, but need additional time to develop their portfolio. Mature students, who have an appropriate level of skill, experience and commitment, will also benefit from this course.

Duration

One academic year. You will need to attend College for 15 hours of variable, timetabled study per week plus commit to undertake further research for approximately 6 hours per week.

Aim

You will gain knowledge and expertise in a wide range of art disciplines such as drawing, painting, video, digital artwork, visual and critical research, sculpture and life drawing. Throughout the course, students work in an open studio environment. Individual tuition is important, with frequent group critique combined with one-to-one support and advice. Students are encouraged to explore their talents using self-motivated and creative approaches, with opportunities to visit galleries and museums to support their studio learning.

Opportunities

Participation on this course can help you to develop a suitable portfolio for applying to an art college. A variety of cultural trips or field studies are also encouraged.

Entry

  • A full NC Art and Design pass or a recent Higher or Advanced Higher Art, NQ Graphic Design, Illustration and Animation, or 2 Higher Grade passes, or other relevant qualification. Evidence of good drawing skills. A strong interest in art. Good written communication skills.
  • Selection for this course is by interview. A portfolio of recent artwork evidencing good drawing skills, creativity and flair is a mandatory requirement of this interview.

For those about to leave school you will not currently be able to apply online and you should ask your guidance teacher for an appliction form.  

Prospects

Education: Possible progression to other HND/degree art courses within other further education colleges or colleges of art.

Employment: Opportunities include roles in community art services, graphic design, gallery work and a range of other art based careers.
