Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2018

Apprentices from across a variety of sectors including; construction, engineering, motor vehicle and Project Search took part in a sort –a -thon  to support local charity, Kids love Clothes. The apprentices took on the challenge of unpacking, sorting, inspecting and folding mountains of clothes in order to support the existing volunteers and trustees of this worthwhile cause.

Kids love Clothes are a local charity who help struggling families with young children in Edinburgh and the Lothians. They accept donations of clean clothes for children before sorting, ironing and then handing the clothes out to families in desperate need.

Apprentices were joined on the day by Cabinet Secretary for Communities, Social Security and Equalities, Angela Constance who was at the college as part of Scottish Apprenticeship week, the nationwide campaign aimed at encouraging more employers to take on apprentices.

Prior to supporting the apprentices in their fundraising efforts, the Cabinet Secretary attended a meeting with students from the college’s Women in STEM course where she took part in a discussion with the learners around what it is like to be a female trying to enter STEM career sectors.

Cabinet Secretary for Communities, Social Security and Equalities, Angela Constance said: “Apprenticeships are life changing opportunities – providing the chance, not only to work and earn, but also to achieve an industry recognised qualification to support future career ambitions.

“The Scottish Government’s continuing commitment to grow, widen and enhance the Scottish Apprenticeship family is providing more opportunities than ever before.  That is why it was fantastic to see apprentices at West Lothian College work together during Scottish Apprenticeship Week and help a local charity.”

West Lothian College Head of Workforce Development, Diane Mitchell  said: “As a college we are delighted to be supporting Kids Love Clothes. Our apprentices deserve a lot of credit for their hard work in supporting the charity and it was great to have the cabinet secretary along to learn more about what options are available to apprentices here at West Lothian College.
